<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u><b>What is Linux?</b></u></span></span><br /><br />Linux is the first truly free Unix Operating System. or other hands  Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. The operating system (OS) relays instructions from an application to, for instance, the computer's processor. The processor performs the instructed task, then sends the results back to the application via the operating system.<br /><br />The underlying GNU Project was launched in 1983 by <a href="http://www.livinginternet.com/i/ia_hackers_stallman.htm"><i>Richard Stallman</i></a> originally to develop a Unix-compatible operating system called <a href="http://www.gnu.org/" target="livinginternet_ext">GNU</a>, intended to be entirely free software. Many programs and utilities were contributed by developers around the world, and by 1991 most of the components of the system were ready. Still missing was the kernel.<br /> <a href="http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/torvalds/" target="livinginternet_ext">Linus Torvalds</a> invented Linux itself. In 1991, Torvalds was a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland where he had been using <a href="http://www.cs.vu.nl/%7East/minix.html" target="livinginternet_ext">Minix</a>, a non-free Unix-like system, and began writing his own kernel. He started by developing device drivers and hard-drive access, and by September had a basic design that he called Version 0.01. This kernel, which is called Linux, was afterwards combined with the GNU system to produce a complete free operating system. <br /> On October 5th, 1991, Torvalds sent a <a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&group=comp.os.minix&as_drrb=b&as_mind=5&as_minm=10&as_miny=1991&as_maxd=5&as_maxm=10&as_maxy=1991&selm=1991Oct5.054106.4647%40klaava.Helsinki.FI" target="livinginternet_ext">posting</a> to the comp.os.minix newsgroup announcing the release of Version 0.02, a basic version that still needed Minix to operate, but which attracted considerable interest nevertheless. The kernel was then rapidly improved by Torvalds and a growing number of volunteers communicating over the <a href="http://www.livinginternet.com/"><em>Internet</em></a>, and by December 19th a functional, stand-alone Unix-like Linux system was released as Version 0.11. <br /> On January 5, 1992, Linux Version 0.12 was released, an improved, stable kernel. The next release was called Version 0.95, to reflect the fact that it was becoming a full-featured system. After that Linux became an underground phenomenon, with a growing group of distributed programmers that continue to debug, develop, and enhance the source code baseline to this day. <br /> Torvalds released Version 0.11 under a freeware license of his own devising, but then released Version 0.12 under the well established GNU General Public License. More and more free software was created for Linux over the next several years. <br />Linux continued to be improved through the 1990's, and started to be used in large-scale applications like <a href="http://www.livinginternet.com/w/wa_build.htm"><em>web hosting</em></a>, networking, and database serving, proving ready for production use. <span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Version 2.2, a major update to the Linux kernel, was officially released in January 1999. </span>By the year 2000, most computer companies supported Linux in one way or another, recognizing a common standard that could finally reunify the fractured world of the <a href="http://www.livinginternet.com/i/iw_unix_war.htm"><i>Unix Wars</i></a>. The next major release was V<span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">2.4 in January 2001, providing </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">(among other improvements) compatibility with the upcoming generations of Intel's 64-bit Itanium computer processors</span>.</span><br /> Although Torvalds continued to function as the Linux kernel release manager, he avoided work at any of the many companies involved with Linux in order to avoid showing favoritism to any particular organization, and instead went to work for a company called <a href="http://www.transmeta.com/" target="livinginternet_ext">Transmeta</a> and helped develop mobile computing solutions, and made his home at the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), which merged into <a href="http://www.linuxfoundation.org/" target="livinginternet_ext">The Linux Foundation</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u> Other Content :</u></b></span><br />LINUX is what an operating system is supposed to be, bootable from a live operating system disk, easily installed, the newer versions have graphical user interfaces that make them manageable for unaccustomed users like me, that were taught on basic dos systems. The inclusion of the technically minded in the development approach may hopefully lead to the standardization of operating system function to permit normal people the opportunity to improve the potential of their own computers, and by extension the capability of personal computers in general, unlike Windows, which seems bent on making it impossible for even the best technicians to keep the boat-anchors from sinking. I've already used the live operating system disk to repair failed windows systems for people that would otherwise not have been able to afford the necessary technical support. Windows keeps failing more frequently, and getting progressively more expensive to service. LINUX seems to be the TIMEX of operating systems, ("takes a licking and keeps on ticking") and seems to be the next step in the chain if people like me are going to be able to keep using computers without a million dollar bankroll. It's a premium technical asset, and it seems a lot of catching-up is on my own plate in order to learn how to use it properly. To the creators of LINUX, well done, that's one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind. compliments.<br /> <br /><br /><b><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u>History of Linux: </u></span></b><br /><br /><div class="post-body entry-content"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 180%;">T</span>here are reams and reams written about the history of Linux umpteen times by many. So why another post on the history of Linux? I felt that I wouldn't be doing justice if this site dedicated to Linux didn't have atleast one post telling how Linux evolved from a project started by a university student to the robust OS it is now. But as the title indicates, I have kept it really short so that any one can come up-to-date by just glancing through it. To actually know the whole history, you have to go all the way back to 1971.</div><span class="fullpost"><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>In June 1971, <span style="font-weight: bold;">R</span>ichard <span style="font-weight: bold;">M</span>atthew <span style="font-weight: bold;">S</span>tallman joined MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as a programmer where he gained popularity with the hacker community and came to be known by his now popular name <span style="font-weight: bold;">RMS</span>. At that time, all the programmers used to share their code freely among each other cutting across various institutions.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2710/1835/1600/rms1.0.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2710/1835/400/rms1.0.jpg" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" /></a><span style="font-size: 85%; font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: #000099;">Fig:</span> Richard Mathew Stallman - The Father of GNU Movement</span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>In 1980, with the advent of portable software - ie software that can be compiled to run on different computers, a business model emerged where in, the companies developing the code refused to share the code with their clients and began restricting copying and redistribution of their software by copyrighting it.</li><li>In response to this trend, Stallman, who believed in the principle that software has to be free always, founded the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/" target="_blank">Free Software Foundation</a> and in 1985, published the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/gnu/manifesto.html" target="_blank">GNU Manifesto</a>. This manifesto outlined his motivation for creating a free OS called GNU, which would be compatible with Unix. By the way, GNU is a recursive acronym for GNU is Not Unix. He along with a group of like minded programmers started work in developing the tools needed to make a complete OS - like an editor (Emacs), a C compiler (GCC), libraries and all associated generic Unix tools like cat,ls, chmod etc.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">In the same year (1985), a professor by name Andy Tanenbaum wrote a Unix like Operating system from scratch based on System V standards POSIX and IEEE for the Intel i386 platform. Not only that, he published all his work under this licence. Now the only thing that GNU lacked was a completely free OS kernel. Even though work was going on in developing <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd.html" target="_blank">HURD</a> which was to fill that gap, the progress was slow.</li><li>In 1990, A finnish student by name Linus Torvalds studying in the University of Helsinki came into contact with Andy Tanenbaum's OS, Minix. Linus wanted to upgrade Minix by putting in more features and improvements. But he was prohibited by Tanenbaum to do so. Then Linus decided to write his own kernel and released it under GPL. Eric.S.Raymond another hacker became one of the prominent voice in this movement.
