Still GIMP 2.8 be the stable version. GIMP 2.9 is released with Unstable version. Because developers planned to make 2.10 as Stable version with the feedbacks from this 2.9 version. Recently Thorsten Stettin, created PPA for UBUNTU to add latest version of 2.9 on Ubuntu. Let check the features and installation methods.

--> the Lanczos 3 sampler & Maximum RGB filter are removed
--> Color temperature correction
--> Tile based computation and projection
--> No- and LoHalo-Samplers
--> New tool: Unified transformation

--> Multi-core CPU / GPU support
--> OpenCL-accelerated filters
--> GEGL based filters and plugins
--> ICC v4 color profile conversion support

In the above features, most of them are already work in progress. Let see how to install GIME 2.9


Installation :

Step : Open Terminal by Accessories -> Terminal or CTRL+ALT+T and then copy the commands given in the table below one-by-one and paste in to your terminal for installing it.



GIMP 2.9 Installation
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge          
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install gimp


If  you don't want to work in GIMP 2.9 then you can able to go back to previous version.

Steps : First you need to remove the add PPA from your machine. So for this , here we purging the added PPA in first command. Then the other command allows you to migrating from newer to older version.

Revert changes to Old version
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge
